The Traditional Dress Shirt
The men's white dress shirt is the traditional dress shirt. This is the shirt that is worn with a tie as part of a traditional suit. There is often a vest with the suit. The tie adds a splash of color to the ensomble.
The white dress shirt may be made of cotton or some other material. It is usually a long sleeved shirt. The sleeves should extend slightly beyond the sleeve of the suit coat. Often these shirts have what is known as a French cuff. This cuff uses a cuff link as a closure instead of a button.
There was an item called a collar stay that was used with the shirt to keep the tips of the collar straight. More modern fabrics have reduced the need for collar stays.
